The Uttar Pradesh Government has asked the NCR Planning Board to provide financial assistance to its proposed Jewar airport project. The bid document inviting concessionaires for the Jewar airport will be made public in August.
Sources in the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs said the Yogi Adityanath Government recently asked the NCR Planning Board to provide financial assistance to its Jewar airport project. It is learnt that the Board has made it clear that no funds would be provided for land acquisition.
“And to get funds for the construction part or capital work, the State Government will have to submit detailed project report,” a senior officer told this newspaper. The formalities pertaining to land acquisition are yet to be completed. The total cost of the project is estimated to be to the tune of Rs 20,000 crore.
The Jewar airport is billed to become the biggest airport in India in terms of area. While the first phase of the project will involve construction of about 4,000 acres, follow-up phases will see construction on rest of the land, besides other services. The international airport is billed to cater to 30-50 million passengers every year over a period of the next 10 to 15 years. The area notified for the Noida Airport is about 3,000 hectares and the first phase will be developed on 1,000 hectares.
The defence ministry has also cleared the proposal. The Ministry of Civil Aviation gave green signal for the proposed Jewar airport project to be constructed in Greater Noida last year. It will be the second airport in the National Capital Region.
This airport will not just address the aviation needs of Delhi airport but also of the other cities like Agra, Mathura, Bulandshahr and Meerut. The proposal for an airport in Jewar was made in 2001 when Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh was the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. His successor Mayawati also backed the plan and acquired more than 2,000 acres for the project.
