UNION TOWNSHIP — The Union Volunteer Fire Department responded to 490 calls last year, including 254 medical and 224 fire-related calls, Fire Chief Tim Beach said in his recently released year-end report.

"The year was marked with many positive outcomes as a result of the hard work and dedication of the department officers and members, the township advisory board and all the residents of Union Township," Beach said.

The department also participated in 12 community events, including fire prevention at the elementary schools, attendance at all Wheeler High School home football games, school functions, Lunch with Santa and various other community events.

The department was funded through the generosity of many residents, local organizations and government funding, Beach said, including its annual draw from the township and collected funds from an annual fund drive newsletter.

Fire Department officers serving Union Township in 2017 are Fire Chief Tim Beach, Assistant Chief Bud Stowers, Lt. Al Jones and Lt. Dan Lowe.

Since Union Volunteer Fire Department is a 100 percent volunteer department, all members should be appreciated for the time they devote to serve the residents of Union Township, Beach said.

Anyone interested in volunteering on the Fire Department should contact Beach at 219-759-3321.
