(CNN/ Meredith) -- On the first day of the Chicagoland Fishing, Travel and outdoor Expo, Schaumburg police say a 17-foot python bit a 4-year-old girl.

The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon. Police say the girl and her family were at the snake exhibit when it the python struck. the little girls was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Another expo attendee, Janie Tiffany said she couldn't imagine this happening to her grandchildren.

"We have three grandkids, and you know, we worry about our dog biting our grandkids. But to have a python bite a little 4-year-old girl, I would be devastated if I was the mother."

The issue is still under investigation and details surrounding the python and its handler are still unknown.
