A BRIGHTON woman is in with a shout of competing for the UK at this year’s Eurovision.

Aimie Atkinson will sing her heart out on national television in her bid to appear on the international stage in May.

She will battle it out against six other acts at Brighton Dome, live on BBC Two, on February 7 in the Eurovision: You Decide competition.

The winner of the show will have a place representing the UK at the finals in Lisbon, Portugal.

Aimie, who lives in Springfield Road, said: “I am so excited to be a part of BBC Eurovision You Decide.

“It’s always been a big dream of mine to represent the UK and now I might have a chance at making that a reality.

“My mum and I would watch the Eurovision every year and fingers crossed she can watch me this year.”

Aimie won the prestigious BBC Radio 2 Voice of Musical Theatre in 2006.

She received high praise from Elaine Paige, who said: “I’ve witnessed the birth of a star” after Aimie’s performance.

The Dome is the site of Abba’s famous 1974 Eurovision victory as they sang Waterloo.

During the 90-minute show, there will be performances of six new pop songs.

The contestants will have to woo viewers at home along with the professional jury in front of them at the historic venue.

After each performance, the acts will be given feedback and hear the panel’s views on how the songs could translate to the Eurovision stage.

The winner will be revealed on the night after the results from the live public vote have been combined with the verdict of the jury.

Mans Zelmerlow, the Swedish pop singer who won the competition back in 2015, is set to co-host the show at the Dome.

He said: “I’m really, really looking forward to hosting Eurovision: You Decide together with Mel [Giedroyc] this year.

“I’m sure we’ll have a great show and I would love to see the UK achieve a great result in Eurovision 2018.

“I can’t wait to be part of the You Decide journey and make both You Decide as well as the Eurovision Finals, a part of every UK home.”

Guy Freeman, editor of special events and formats for BBC Studios, said: “We are so happy to be able to bring the show to such an iconic Eurovision venue.

“It will be the perfect home for what is shaping up to be a very exciting contest.”

BBC Four will broadcast both live semi-finals on May 8 and 10.

The grand final itself will be aired on BBC One on May 12.
