The National Weather Service in Wilmington has issued a dense fog advisory for the Cape Fear region.
SOUTHEASTERN N.C. -- A dense fog advisory has been issued for the Cape Fear and Grand Strand areas until midnight.
While dense sea fog is mainly visible along the coast and offshore, Dave Loewenthal, a forecaster with the National Weather Service in Wilmington, said it is moving inland somewhat. The fog will cause visibility to be reduced to less than a quarter of a mile.
“Whenever you have relatively warm, moist air running over that cold ocean, that’s how we get sea fog,” Loewenthal said.
Though the advisory is in effect until midnight, Loewenthal said visibility is expected to improve within the next couple of hours due to some expected rainfall that will be moving into the region.
“Visibilities are likely to be pretty low in the rain, but not super low like with sea fog,” he said.
