SHARJAH: Marking the ‘Year of Zayed’, University Hospital Sharjah (UHS), Sharjah’s leading healthcare provider, will be hosting their 4th annual blood donation drive on Jan.30. The drive is in cooperation with Sharjah Blood Transfusion & Research Center. The blood drive will run from 9am to 2pm, and will be held at the hospital itself.
In the past three years, University Hospital Sharjah’s blood donation drives collectively attracted 400+ donors with over 160,000 ml of blood given, which covers an estimated 25 per cent of the hospital’s annual blood products consumption. In 2016, UHS consumed 1300 units of packed red cells, fresh frozen plasma, platelets and cryoprecipitate. In 2017, the numbers rose to 1700 units in total. While past donations potentially impacted the lives of approximately 800 patients, the demand for blood donation is ever-increasing.
With demand exceeding supply by significant margins, the importance and need for donated blood is always on a rise. UHS is encouraging more participation and are anticipating donations from staff, patients and visitors, belonging to a wide variety of nationalities and ages.
