The Siena Heights University women’s basketball team hosted its annual pink game for breast cancer awareness Saturday against NAIA Division II No. 19-ranked Lawrence Tech.
Siena Heights struggled early and couldn’t catch up, dropping the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference matchup 70-57.
The Saints (13-10, 7-7 WHAC) trailed 19-8 after one quarter. Lawrence Tech (19-4, 11-3) extended the lead to 15 on four occasions in the second quarter, including 37-22 at halftime.
SHU shot 26 percent from the field in the first half.
The Saints trailed 51-38 after three quarters, but got it down to nine with 6:35 left in the game. Lawrence Tech answered with a 10-4 run to make it a 15-point game with 2:21 to go.
Azalea Miller’s 3-pointer trimmed the deficit to 12, before Lawrence Tech made free throws to build its lead back to 15 with 29 seconds left.
Taylar McNeal had 12 points and 13 rebounds off the bench for SHU. Demi Russell had 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Alyssa Larson had 11 points, eight rebounds and four blocks. Miller finished with 11 points.
Calvin 77, Adrian 48: At Adrian, the Bulldogs fell behind early and couldn’t recover in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association game.
Calvin (12-7, 7-3 MIAA) took a 25-8 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. The Knights scored 31 points off of turnovers.
Ashley Morris (Madison) had 13 points, six rebounds and two assists for Adrian (8-10, 5-5).
WOMEN’S HOCKEY
Adrian 3, St. Norbert 0: At De Pere, Wis., Kate Turner recorded her second straight shutout to help the NCAA Division III No. 6-ranked Bulldogs sweep the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association series.
Turner saved all 15 shots she faced Saturday after making 18 saves in Friday’s 1-0 win.
Tory Harshman scored twice for the Bulldogs (13-5-1, 10-1-1 NCHA). Sydney Daversa added an empty-net goal late in the third period.
MEN’S HOCKEY
Adrian 7, Finlandia 1: At Adrian, the top-ranked Bulldogs showed no signs of a letdown after Friday’s big win over St. Norbert.
Adrian (17-4, 13-1 NCHA) scored three goals in each of the first two periods to pull away from Finlandia (1-19-1, 0-13-1).
Braden Hellems and Trevor Boyd each had a goal and two assists. Kyle Brothers and Cameron Cooper each had a goal and an assist, while Ryan Cusin had two assists.
Adrian goaltender Dillon Kelley (6-1) made 26 saves.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Siena Heights 85, Lawrence Tech 61: At Adrian, a hot-shooting performance powered the Saints to the WHAC victory.
Siena Heights (10-12, 6-9 WHAC) posted its third win in the past four games.
The Saints shot 55 percent from the floor (29-for-53), 61 percent from 3-point territory (14-for-23) and 81 percent from the free-throw line (13-for-16).
Nick Randle made seven of his nine 3-point attempts and finished with 23 points to go with four steals.
Josh Winowiecki scored 17 points and added five rebounds and two blocks off the bench. Tony Jackson had 13 points, eight rebounds, two blocks, three steals and five assists.
Calvin 94, Adrian 72: At Grand Rapids, the Bulldogs struggled to slow down Calvin in the second half of the MIAA game.
Adrian (14-5, 5-3 MIAA) trailed by three at halftime.
Calvin (7-12, 3-5) outscored the Bulldogs 54-35 in the second half, while shooting 55 percent from the field and making 10 3-pointers. Calvin finished the game with 17 3s.
Justin Webster (Madison) had 20 points, nine rebounds and three assists for Adrian. Jordan Harris had 20 points and three assists.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Siena Heights at Judson Early Bird Tournament: At Elgin, Ill., the Saints posted a pair of sweeps in the second day of the tournament.
The Saints swept Menlo in their first match of the day 25-20, 28-26, 25-18.
Kyle Browne had 10 kills and eight digs for SHU (5-1). Tyler Hubbard-Neil had eight kills and eight digs, while Keegan Crawford had 30 assists and eight digs. Jack Pranckus led the Saints with nine digs.
SHU then swept Campbellsville 25-16, 25-15, 25-10.
Hubbard-Neil had 10 kills and eight digs. Browne downed nine kills on 15 attempts, while Crawford dished out 25 assists. Pranckus added eight digs.
Greenville at Adrian: The Bulldogs rallied to force a fifth set, but fell 21-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-15, 5-15 at the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center.
Noah Marcinkowski had 20 kills on 39 attempts (.385) and 13 digs for the 1-3 Bulldogs.
Kevin Curley had 19 kills and 13 digs, while Joseph Campana had 45 assists and 12 digs. Kyle Bell added 10 digs.
