A 34-year-old Singaporean man has been arrested after allegedly riding his electric scooter into a woman at Chinatown MRT station.
The incident occurred at about 3.50pm on Friday, the police said in a statement yesterday. The Sunday Times understands that the woman was a 45-year-old tourist.
A photo published in Lianhe Zaobao yesterday shows the woman on the floor outside the station, with an e-scooter parked nearby.
The Chinese daily identified the woman as a tourist from Taiwan who was visiting Singapore with her husband and daughter.
She had just exited the train station when she was hit from behind by the e-scooter, Lianhe Zaobao reported.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force told The Sunday Times that it responded to the incident at 91, Upper Cross Street at about 3.50pm and took one person to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. The woman is believed to have suffered minor injuries.
Officers from Central Police Division went to the scene and arrested the suspect. The e-scooter was also seized. Investigations are ongoing.
The case has been classified as a rash act causing hurt, which carries a jail term of up to a year and/or fine of up to $5,000.
The police in their statement advised all users of personal mobility devices "to exercise due care and caution when riding to prevent accidents from occurring".
"When in areas with high crowd density, it is recommended that users dismount and push their devices instead of riding them," said the police.
