Top GOP leader rejects need for Congress to protect special counsel Mueller

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy on Sunday dismissed the need for Congress to protect Robert Mueller, the special counsel overseeing the Russia investigation, despite recent reports that President Trump wanted to fire Mueller last year. The No. 2 Republican in the House said on NBC's Meet the Press that Trump fully cooperated with Mueller's team and "I think we'll just continue this investigation to see where it goes." But after reports last week that Trump ordered Mueller fired and White House counsel Don McGahn refused, there is growing support among some Senate Republicans for stepping in to protect Mueller.

Steve Wynn resigns as RNC finance chair

Casino mogul Steve Wynn resigned as the Republican National Committee Finance Chair amid sexual misconduct allegations Saturday. The billionaire CEO of Las Vegas-based Wynn Resorts was alleged to have engaged in sexual misconduct with company employees over decades, according to a Friday report by The Wall Street Journal. Wynn's abrupt departure threatens to complicate the party's fundraising efforts heading into an already challenging mid-term election cycle for the GOP.  A day later, Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., fired Chief of Staff Clint Reed following allegations of “improper conduct” with employees in the senator’s office.

Michigan attorney general assigns special prosecutor to investigate MSU

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette announced a special prosecutor to investigate "systemic issues with sexual misconduct at Michigan State," during a press conference Saturday. William Forsyth, a retired Kent County (Mich.) prosecutor, will serve as the independent special prosecutor, and the Michigan State Police will provide assistance with any criminal issues that arise as part of the investigation. The involvement of the Michigan State Police and Schuette's office comes after many months of calls for an independent investigation into how MSU addressed allegations against former MSU doctor Larry Nassar going back two decades. Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis had already resigned.

IKEA founder dies at 91, once had Nazi leanings

Ingvar Kamprad, the IKEA founder who turned a small-scale mail order business into a global furniture empire, has died at 91, the company said Sunday. Kamprad’s life story is intimately linked to the company he founded at age 17 on the family farm. His work ethic, frugality and down-to-earth style remain at the core of its corporate identity today. But his missteps in life, including early flirtations with Nazism, never rubbed off on IKEA, one of the world’s most recognizable brands.
