Hot Art in a Cold War
“Hot Art in a Cold War: Intersections of Art and Science in the Soviet Era” will spotlight the development of 20th-century Soviet nuclear weaponry, space travel and kinetics through Soviet artworks from the Zimmerli Museum of Art’s Norton and Nancy Dodge Collection of Nonconformist Art. The art will be juxtaposed with Soviet-era artifacts from the space race and atomic era. The exhibition will run through May 20 at the Bruce Museum, 1 Museum Dr.
Photo exhibit of Route 66
Greenwich Art Society members Mike and Sally Harris are showing a selection of their photographs of “Route 66 — a photographic journey” at the YWCA of Greenwich, 259 E. Putnam Ave., through Jan. 30. Building hours are 6 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. weekdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays.
Author Claire Messud
The Greenwich chapter of Room to Read will host an evening with New York Times best-selling author Claire Messud, who wrote “The Emperor’s Children,” “The Woman Upstairs” and “The Burning Girl,” at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 30 at Greenwich Country Day School, 401 Old Church Road. Looking at Jane Goodall
Greenwich High student Rene Jameson, a member of the Roots and Shoots U.S. National Youth Leadership Council — youth representatives of the Jane Goodall Foundation — will introduce the film “Jane,” a documentary about Jane Goodall using footage from the National Geographic archives, set to be shown at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 31 at the Avon Theater, 272 Bedford St., Stamford. RMA hearing lecture
Dr. Bettina Wohlforth, a clinical audiologist with 34 years of experience, will discuss basic ear anatomy, the hearing test and what it tells us and current hearing aid options at 11 a.m. Jan. 31 at First Presbyterian Church, 1 W. Putnam Ave. The weekly lecture series is free and open to the public.
“I Am Evidence” screening
The Center for Sexual Assault Crisis Counseling and Education, in partnership with HBO Films, the Joyful Heart Foundation and the Connecticut Alliance to End Sexual Violence, is hosting a free documentary screening of “I Am Evidence” at 7 p.m. Jan. 31 at Greenwich Town Hall, 101 Field Point Road. Hacks of kindness
Sacred Heart Greenwich in collaboration with Random Hacks of Kindness Jr. is hosting a “hackathon” for social good for students in grades 4 through 8 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 3 at 1177 King St. The goal of the one-day hackathon is to introduce students to technology and to show them how it can be used to create solutions that benefit nonprofit organizations. Take Your Child to the Library Day
The Cos Cob Library, 5 Sinawoy Road, will host a workshop with Debra Hamuka-Falkenham where participants will draw their own individual character and then transform it into a 3-D clay character from noon to 1:30 p.m. Feb 3. Then, the library will hold its annual Valentine workshop from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.
Introduction to minerals
Mineral collector and Stamford Mineralogical Society President Dr. Howard Heitner will give a talk and demonstration on the importance, properties and structure of minerals at 2 p.m. on Feb. 4 at the Innis Arden Cottage/Seaside Center at Greenwich Point. Catherine Russell performs
Greenwich Library’s Peterson Concert Series will host musician and vocalist Catherine Russell at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 4 in the Cole Auditorium, 101 W. Putnam Ave. In 2012, Russell won a Grammy Award for her appearance as a featured artist on the soundtrack album for the HBO TV series “Boardwalk Empire.” The Peterson Concert Series is open to all at no charge through the support of the Greenwich Library board of trustees and other donors. Botanical drawing class
Botanical artist Jeanne Reiner will offer a botanical drawing class from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Feb. 10 at Greenwich Land Trust, 370 Round Hill Road. Foreign policy in the Age of Twitter
Ann Cooper’s voice was well known to National Public Radio listeners as NPR’s first Moscow bureau chief, covering the tumultuous events of the final five years of Soviet communism. She continues to write about the Glasnost era, the subsequent decline of press freedom in Russia and the country’s global media strategy. The Jewish experience in Greenwich
The Greenwich Historical Society’s exhibition, “An American Odyssey: The Jewish Experience in Greenwich,” runs through Apr. 15 at 39 Strickland Road. It examines how Jews, like other immigrants, struggled with the pull to integrate into American society and yet remain distinct.
Patriotic persuasion
“Patriotic Persuasion: American Posters of the First World War” will highlight the variety of approaches that government agencies used to encourage participation in and support for World War I.
