Airport, Ida and Jefferson all brought home tournament championships Saturday.
MILAN — Airport wrestler Kyle Bergmooser ended last season with a loss to Steve Dunmire of Warren Fitzgerald.
That forced Bergmooser to settle for fourth place in the state.
Dunmire is currently ranked No. 2 in the state at 171 pounds, but Bergmooser served notice Saturday that this is a new year.
Bergmooser, who practiced just once this week because he was battling the flu, beat Dunmire 8-3 to cap a 5-0 day at the Milan Team Tournament.
Bergmooser also helped the Jets win all five of their matches to win the tournament title.
Airport improved to 21-6 by beating Milan 46-29, Ann Arbor Huron 72-5, East Jackson 54-24, Hartland B 50-27 and Warren Fitzgerald 60-18.
Blake Piette (119), Jon Fritz (135), Arthur Calloway (140), Justin Chambless (145) and Sam Johnson (285) joined Bergmooser at 5-0, and Toby Hoppert (112) and Seth Drummond (160) went 4-1.
Perfect day for Ida
LINCOLN PARK — Ida ran its dual-meet record to 19-5 by winning five matches to capture the title of the Lincoln Park Railsplitter Team Tournament Saturday.
The Blue Streaks dispatched Ypsilanti Lincoln 54-18, Jefferson B 57-18, Grosse Pointe South 63-6, Laingsburg 76-6 and Anchor Bay 42-26.
Hunter Assenmacher (103-112), Brandon Wireman (119-125), Hunter Schaefer (125-130), Kalim Low (140), Joe Barton (145), Seth Barnier (171-189), Josh Earls (171-189) and Jake Campbell (285) all went 5-0 for Ida and Park Henry (160) was 4-1.
Jefferson wins tourney
LIVONIA – Dawson Gessner (112), Caleb Garro (140), Justin Duvall (160) and Thomas Eads (215) won championships to carry Jefferson’s wrestling team to the championship of the Observerland Tournament Saturday.
Duvall was voted the Most Valuable Wrestler in the upper weights and one of Garro’s wins came against the No. 5-ranked wrestler in Division 1.
Josh McGee (119), Greg White (130) and Tyler Hattley (285) all took second for the Bears and Ethan Brabant (103) was fourth.
Jefferson’s B team went 3-2 to place fourth at the Lincoln Park Duals.
Hunter Major (103), Jac White (119) and Justin Major (135) all went 5-0 and Vaughn Gardner (215), Riley Crononwett (145), and Noah Minney were 4-1.
Bedford starts slow
LAPEER – Bedford lost first match of the day, then picked up the pace to finish 4-1 in the Lapeer Lightning Duals Saturday.
The Mules (19-2) opened with a 45-39 loss to DeWitt, then beat Byron 66-15, Flushing 42-36, Grand Blanc 45-19 and Lapeer 62-12.
Austin Emerson (285) and Cade Sutterfield (119) each won all five of their matches and Neil Antrassian (152) and Colin Jagielski (171) finished 4-1.
Dundee tested
LOWELL — Dundee wrestled just twice Saturday at the Lowell Duals, but saw plenty of good competition.
The Vikings beat Lowell 39-16 and fell 42-36 to Cincinnati LaSalle.
Lowell, which has won the last four state titles in Division 2, is ranked No. 1 again this year and holds the No. 17 national ranking. LaSalle is ranked No. 11 nationally.
Brandon Whitman (215 and 285) delivered two pins for Dundee, and Christian Killion (130) picked up a pin and a win.
Chiefs finish second
CLIO — New Boston Huron went 4-1 and finished in second place Saturday at the Clio Duals.
The Chiefs defeated South Lyon East 66-6, Coleman 88-0, Mt. Morris 64-9, and Birch Run 37-22. Birch Run is ranked fifth in Division 3.Eaton Rapids, ranked No. 2 in Division 2, dealt Huron its only loss of the day 33-32.
Going 5-0 on the day for Huron were David Jividen (112), Owen Zablocki (125), and Lucas Brewer (215/285). Drake Pauwels was 4-0 at 189/215.
Going 4-1 for the Chiefs (25-2) were Trevor Mason (160/171) and Cody Brenner (160/171), while Adam Brenner (152) finished 3-1.
Huron coach Jake Shulaw earned his 400th career coaching victory with the Chiefs’ victory over Birch run. He earned 75 victories as the head coach of Flat Rock to start his career.
Smith leads Trojans
ALLEN PARK — Jacob Smith earned his 100th career win and finished 5-0 on the day at 171 pounds to lead Monroe to a second place finish at the Allen Park Tournament.
Monroe (22-9) defeated Ann Arbor Skyline 67-6, Allen Park 48-15, Dearborn Edsel Ford 49-20, and Flint Carman-Ainsworth 54-24. Dearborn Fordson defeated the Trojans 38-28.
Also finishing 5-0 for Monroe were Jayseon Dye (119) and Logan Gonzales (145), while Dom Cusumano (160) was 4-0.
Going 4-1 were Jarrod Kimble (130), Wyatt Head (4-1), and Ethan Hoffner (189). Cael Head bumped up a weight class and finished 2-1, and Alex Rincon went 2-1 filling in at heavyweight for the first time.
Five Rams place
LESLIE — Flat Rock had five wrestlers place Saturday at the Leslie Invitational.
Jimmy Ibarra (125), Seth Coplen (145), and Mike Simons (215) finished sixth, Joey Motyka (135) was seventh, and Kurtis Ford placed eighth at 130.
