Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s wedding: Windsor prepares for royal event

MEGHAN Markle and Prince Harry’s wedding is on the horizon and Windsor is a hotbed of activity as preparations are made for the big day with anti-terror barriers, a big screen for crowds to watch the event and plenty of souvenirs popping up already.

Extra security will be in place on the day

The happy couple will tie the knot on May 19 at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle, with millions expected to watch around the globe.

And big crowds are set to arrive in Windsor too, meaning a host of new measures have to be in place for the wedding of the year.

Engineers are already hard at work, preparing cables beneath roads in the town centre.

The cables will operate a huge screen so the assembled crowds can watch the ceremony take place.

Around the town gift shops are stocking up on memorabilia so visitors can take home a souvenir of the historic event.

Pieces are also on sale commemorating the announcement of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's engagement.

Plaques, plates, cups and keyring are on sale and you can even buy a commemorative spoon complete with a photo of the smiling pair.

At the castle, where armed police are in place, security is set to be ramped up significantly.

Temporary barriers are strategically located at roads leading into the area as the UK continues to face a terror threat.

And the local council is set to spend millions on increased measures, including extra barriers and CCTV, this year.

Windsor and Maidenhead Council has come under fire in recent weeks in row over rough sleepers in the area.

Its leader sparked outrage by suggesting street sleepers should be cleared from the streets in preparation for the wedding.

The comments have led to three resignations by Conservative councillors and Mr Dudley is expected to face a no-confidence vote brought by the council's opposition group on January 29.

Mr Dudley, who has apologised for his comments, survived an attempt within his own Conservative group to oust him this week, but since then a third Tory councillor has resigned.

Geoffrey Hill announced on Thursday that he would follow in the footsteps of Paul Brimacombe and Asghar Majeed, who quit immediately after the vote, with all three continuing as Independent Conservatives.

Mr Hill remains as chairman of the Maidenhead Conservative Association, of which Theresa May is a member.

Explaining why he felt it necessary to resign he said: "I cannot continue to lend my support to Cllr Dudley as Leader and I do not agree with the majority of my fellow Conservative Councillors on this subject."

He added that there "is now a clear divergence between what the Maidenhead Conservative Group has become under the leadership of Cllr Dudley and what I consider it should be".

The council leader's comments "brought a lot of negative press towards the royal borough" he said.

He added: "It is a sin to bring the royal family into politics. I think that was very wrong.”

A petition to stop rough sleepers being taken off the streets attracted tens of thousands of signatures.

And left-wing comedian Russell Brand urged neighbouring Slough Council to donate an existing building to help the homeless in the Windsor area.
