Bronte flies past Garden City to continue remarkable winning streak

At first glance, the Bronte Longhorns don't look like a basketball team on a 24-game winning streak.

They have only seven players, and none of them are taller than 5-foot-11.

But when you watch Bronte play -- moving the ball around beautifully and knocking down one shot after another -- it's easy to see why the Longhorns haven't lost a game since November.

They kept their remarkable winning streak going Friday with an easier-than-expected 57-31 win at home over Garden City.

Zach Jackson poured in a game-high 29 points to lead No. 17-ranked Bronte past its top district rival, which only lost 38-34 when they played in Garden City last month.

This time, Bronte jumped out in front quick with a 9-0 lead, and the Longhorns essentially put the game away by halftime with a 31-12 advantage.

Bronte led 47-19 heading into the fourth quarter.

Bronte head coach Rocky Rawls said home-court advantage may have been the biggest reason the rematch wasn't nearly as competitive as the first meeting.

"We always play better at home, and I think that had a lot to do with it," Rawls said. "We shoot the ball better here. But we just played with more energy. The last game was over the holidays, and it was cancelled the day before because of weather, so it was just kind of sluggish.

"We like to try and protect our home court, and we hadn't played in eight days since last Thursday, so they were ready to get it."

Rawls said his team's lack of height hasn't been that big of a problem -- at least not yet.

He anticipates bigger obstacles down the road in the postseason, of course, but the Longhorns have managed to play above their height so far.

"We're small, but we've got a couple kids with long arms, and they just make up for it with just desire," Rawls said. "We do a good job rebounding as small as we are, we really do. And this was a concern tonight because they're so much taller than we are."

As far as having only seven players on his varsity roster, Rawls said it's a simply a lack of numbers.

And among those seven players, one is a call-up from the junior varsity since one of the Longhorns' two regular reserves is injured.

"We basically play five kids right now, and then a little bit with the subs," Rawls said. "So our open date came at the perfect time. Hopefully we can keep this streak going until the end of district and then get another little break to help our legs a little more."

Bronte has one number on its side. Of the seven regular players on the varsity roster, six of them are seniors.

Garden City head coach Brad Hall said that might be the Longhorns' biggest strength.

"Those kids have been playing together a long time, and they know where everybody is on the court," Hall said. "And you have to give a lot of credit to Coach Rawls. He does a great job over here."

Rawls has been coaching at Bronte since 1983, leading the Longhorns to the state championship game four times.

He knows winning streaks like this don't come around often.

"You have to be fortunate to get to this point," Rawls said. "You have to win some close ball games and that kind of thing, and we've stayed relatively healthy."

Point guard Shawn Puentez had 14 points Friday, but he made a far bigger impact with the entertaining way he ran the offense, setting up his teammates with some highlight-reel passes.

Jaxon Chantrill added seven points, Tanner Bedford had five and Aaron Cervenka had two.

Puentez said the 24-game winning streak has been a fun experience.

"It feels good getting everyone to notice us," Puentez said. "But sometimes it's bad. I mean, we don't want a lot of people to notice us."

Puentez said he and his teammates watched in the stands when Bronte reached back-to-back state finals in 2011 and 2012.

He said the ultimate goal is to reach that stage again, but the immediate goal is simply to win district.

All the while, the Longhorns are preparing for an eventual tall playoff opponent that could present a serious challenge.

"We work on drills and all that, because we know we're probably going to be the shortest team in the playoffs," Puentez said. "So we've got to work and we've got to be physical and do all of that stuff."

Bronte improved to 24-1 overall and 7-0 in District 14-1A. The Longhorns will play again Tuesday at Sterling City.

Garden City fell to 13-8, 6-2. The Bearkats were led by Parker Koenning with nine points.

Garden City is off Tuesday and will play again next Friday, Feb. 2 at home against Sterling City.
