A pair of Lansing men face multiple charges related to a shooting incident early Saturday morning.

At approximately 2:16 a.m., Mt. Pleasant city police responded to a call of shots fired outside Wayside Central at 2000 S. Mission St., according to city police chief Paul Lauria.

As the two men were leaving the establishment, the 20-year-old Lansing man driving the vehicle fired three bullets into the air from a Taurus 40-calibur handgun while the 22-year-old passenger was in the vehicle.

No one was hurt in the incident, Lauria said.

The 20-year-old was arrested on nine different charges: discharge of a weapon from a vehicle; carrying a concealable weapon; operating a vehicle without insurance; operating while intoxicated; carrying a concealable weapon while intoxicated; reckless driving; reckless use of a firearm; brandishing a firearm in public and violations of driving on a restricted license.

The 22-year-old was arrested for carrying a concealable weapon, according to Lauria.

“I’m sure there could be more charges coming,” he said.

The two men remain lodged at the Isabella County jail; their names have not been released since they have not been arraigned yet.

An arraignment could occur as early as Monday.

They are not Central Michigan University students, Lauria said.

After the vehicle drove away from Wayside Central, police worked to locate it.

“With the cooperation of Wayside staff, they helped us with acquiring the description of the vehicle and where it went,” Lauria said; surveillance video captured the shooting.

Why the men were at Wayside Central to begin with is not yet known, according to Lauria.

The vehicle had initially stopped in the parking lot of McDonalds at 1804 S. Mission St. but left this location.

It was eventually located near Burger King on South Mission Street in a southbound direction when a traffic stop was conducted, Lauria said.

Lauria said he did not know the exact amount of time it took to locate the vehicle.

The handgun was recovered during the traffic stop and is in police custody, he said.

Also during the stop, police determined the driver to be intoxicated although his blood alcohol content level is not yet known.

Assisting with the traffic stop was the Central Michigan University Police Department.

The vehicle driven was impounded, Lauria said.
