OKOBOJI, Iowa -- The 38th annual University of Okoboji Winter Games attracted thousands to the Iowa Great Lakes Saturday for plenty of outdoor fun – and warm temperatures.
The Polar Plunge – one of the signature events – brought more participants than the 37th winter games and so many spectators it was easy to see water pooling around their feet.
While activities started Thursday, the winter festival heated up Friday night with the Chili Cook-off. Featuring a Disney theme, the event let visitors sample everything from Poison Apple chili to Pizza Topping chili.
Saturday, a full slate of games, races, tournaments, concerts and food tastings spilled out across the lakes region. Among the new offerings: Drill or Die, a hand ice auger competition.
Thanks to temperatures in the 30s, visitors were able to enjoy plenty of activities, many of them staged at Parks Marina.
Sunday, the games conclude with several food events and music.
