Nicolai Jorgensen to Newcastle: This transfer is an absolute bargain at £20m

NICOLAI JORGENSEN to Newcastle is a transfer that makes sense for both club and player.

Newcastle Nicolai JorgensenGETTY

Newcastle want to sign Nicolai Jorgensen

It has been a long time since I met Jorgensen, during an interview after another of his stellar performances for FC Copenhagen.

The Denmark international, who stands a confident 6ft 2in, is every bit the striker Newcastle need.

Jorgensen has long been touted for better things in his native Denmark after steamrollering through the top flight there at Copenhagen.

Fans were gutted to see him go.

He is the perfect example of a player who has waited for his big chance - and now it surely comes.

Rafael Benitez has spoken of his keenness to get the deal done and, all being well, Feyenoord will let him go for £20million.

That is a bargain for a striker who has proved his nose for goal over the past six years in two leagues and in Europe.

He is also better than Copenhagen’s other recent striker departures to England.

Andreas Cornelius could have made it at Cardiff had injuries and Mr Tan’s impatience not cut the deal short.

But both Dame N’Doye (Hull) and Igor Vetokele (Charlton) failed to impress.

Jorgensen is two, maybe three levels better than these men.

The Dane failed to make the grade as a 21-year-old at Bayer Leverkusen and Copenhagen snapped him up on the cheap.

And from there he excelled in Copenhagen’s stocky, robust style of football.

Newcastle Nicolai is valued at Feyenoord at £20m

The Danish champions have for years now always played with one - or two if they have the luxury - big striker.

Jorgensen was a lean whippet when he arrived at Parken Stadium in 2012 and four years later he left a strong, niggly, confident goalscorer.

It’s the same body transformation Andy Murray has gone through in his career. Suddenly there was bulk where there was none before.

A move to Feyenoord in 2016 surprised many fans in Denmark. It was seen almost as a sideways step for the international striker, who is now a regular on the Denmark team sheet.

Jorgensen maintained his prolific goalscoring in Holland last season to help fire Feyenoord to a first Eredivisie title since 1999.

This campaign injuries have hampered the one-time Brondby academy player and Feyenoord have suffered because of it.

Make no mistake, are not signing the finished product.

Jorgensen has a temperamental side and showed that with a silly red card in the 2-0 defeat to Ajax earlier this month.

But that confidence - some would call it arrogance - drives his goals.

He is not the fastest forward and Benitez will not be able to rely on him leading a counter-attacking away performance.

But he knows how to make a nuisance in the box and has the skill set to flummox any Premier League defender.

He has Champions League experience and didn’t look out of place when cheekily scoring against Juventus back in the 2013/14 campaign.

If Benitez can convince Mike Ashley to stump up the cash, Newcastle will get a very good bargain indeed.
