When the daughter of President Trump’s pick to lead the Midwest Environmental Protection Agency introduced her mother at an all-staff meeting earlier this month, she detailed how her mom helped her beat her driver’s license test after she failed the first time.
“I failed my first driving test,” Hannah Stepp, 23, told staffers while trying to humanize her mother, Cathy Stepp.
“My mom said, ‘You’re not going to fail it again!'” Hannah Stepp continued, according to the Chicago Tribune. "She put on a disguise of a fake nose and sunglasses and went to the DMV and followed someone taking the driving portion of the test so that she could learn the route, and then we practiced it.”
Hannah Stepp said she didn’t fail her test the second time.
She said she didn’t know where her mom got the fake nose, but she always carries it with her.
Staffers told the Chicago Tribune they were shocked by the story.
“It was baffling,” one staffer told the news outlet on condition of anonymity. “For a public official’s daughter to admit that in front of her entire staff? It’s unethical … and then, did she help put someone unsafe on the roads?”
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation said Hannah Stepp will not be required to retake the test.
“I wouldn’t characterize it as cheating,” EPA spokesman Jeff Kelley told the outlet.
