Huron edges Mitchell late

Despite having three open weight classes, the Huron wrestling team was hardly willing to roll over for the Mitchell Kernels.

Pulling out narrow victories at 106 pounds, 113, 220 and 285 proved to be enough to overcome an 18-point deficit and stun the Kernel crowd for a 30-28 Eastern South Dakota Conference dual victory on Friday at the MHS gym.

"We got beat by (two) points. It was a great dual, the fans got one heck of a show," MHS head coach Travis Carpenter said. "I don't know what the difference was. Our kids gave great effort and we had some different matches. We had chances to win the dual. We could have won it in three different spots. Sometimes, it doesn't go your way."

The final blow for the Kernels came in the last match at 285 pounds where Huron's Devyn Balster outlasted Beau Foote in overtime for the sudden victory. Equally as important was Huron's Zack Siemonsma's 3-2 decision over Wyatt Winter in the 220-pound match.

"I was happy with how we wrestled at the end," Huron head coach Dan McCarty said. "It was a typical Mitchell dual that nobody was going to concede any points."

With the crowd on its feet, Foote held a 1-0 lead over Balster heading into the third round. Trying to ride Balster out for end of the match, Foote was penalized for stalling and the match went to overtime where Balster pulled out the win.

"He's an eighth-grader and I put him in a position to try and win the dual for us. That was the matchup I wanted," Carpenter said about Foote's match. "I can't give those last two kids enough credit. Wyatt had a chance to win against a kid that pinned us last week. It just didn't come out our way."

Huron opened the dual with narrow victories at 106 and 113 pounds and McCarty said his team's first two wins were just as important as the final two victores. Brock Sparks (106) was edged by Huron's Jallele Jenkins 2-1 and Cole Ochsner earned a 5-2 decision over Brandon Sparks at 113 pounds. Mitchell was without Blake Stange, who is its regular competitor at 113 pounds.

"We were lucky their 113 pounder wasn't in the lineup," McCarty said. "It was a nice win for us. We've had a difficult year with injuries and illnesses."

For the Kernels, Briggs Havlik (160) won by pinfall and Carson Max (195) picked up a major decision. Kyler Bauder (120), Colby Gillen (126) and Joe VanOverschelde (145) each won by forfeit.

"I thought our upperclassmen did a great job of doing the things they needed to do," Carpenter said. "It's all right there for us. We just have to go get it."

The Tigers also got major decision victories from Chipper Shillingstad (138), TahJae Jenkins-Harris (152) and Travis Kleinsasser (170), while Wyatt Larsen (182) beat Carter Max by an 8-2 decision.

Mitchell competes in the Brookings Invite today in Brookings, while Huron competes at the Lee Wolf Invitational in Aberdeen today.
