WOLCOTT – Two dead coyotes were dumped near the boat launch at Scovill Reservoir, possibly by a vigilante seeking retribution for a pack of coyotes that killed a dog Saturday.

Police found the coyote corpses, one male and one female, Wednesday morning after receiving a complaint.

The female appeared to be shot, but officers were unable to determine what killed the male, Animal Control Officer Roz Nenninger said.

“I cannot confirm if these coyotes were a legal kill or not, but what I will say is that there are proper ways and laws put in place to deal with these animals,” she said. “And this is not the proper way.”

It is legal to trap and hunt coyotes in Connecticut, but hunters and trappers are required to follow strict laws and regulations. The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection’s guide to hunting and trapping animals is available here.

“Any illegal and unjustified killing of any animals, wild or domesticated, will not be tolerated and will be dealt with properly and within the confines of the laws,” Nenninger said.

Wolcott residents have turned to social media to express their frustration about a small dog named Brody, a chihuahua and Jack Russell terrier mix, that was dragged by several coyotes into the woods near Cancellaro Drive and killed Saturday night.

Some residents have suggested organizing hunts to curb their population.

According to a DEEP publication, coyotes will attack and kill pets, especially cats and small dogs weighing less than 25 pounds. The best way to protect pets is to not allow them to run free, the agency says. Cats should be kept indoors, particularly at night, and small dogs should be on a leash and under close supervision at all times.
