New Hampshire authorities are asking the public for information about a cat found frozen to the surface of an icy pond.
The cat was rescued Thursday from the pond in the town of Newton.
On Friday, officials said the cat had died. It has to be humanely euthanized.
While the cat did not fall through the ice, according to police, it was found frozen to the surface.
Police said a concerned citizen first spotted the cat and called local firefighters who poured warm water over the cat to melt the ice and set its paws, belly and tail free.
Animal control officers initially cared for the cat, but out of concern that it was in pain, they took the animal to The New Hampshire Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Police said the cat was male and was not neutered. Its fur appeared to be matted and unkempt.
Other residents told police they’ve seen the cat in the neighborhood and believe it was feral.
