Cheers – Most Useful Citizen

Congratulations to former Terrebonne Parish President Michel Claudet, who earlier this week was named The Courier’s Most Useful Citizen during the Houma-Terrebonne Chamber of Commerce’s annual banquet.

The award is quite an honor, and Claudet is quite deserving.

“I’d like to thank those who nominated and voted for me and who worked with me,” he told the chamber members.

He said he was most proud of his work trying to keep down the cost of flood insurance during his eight years in office.

Other honorees at the banquet are: American Legion Teenager of the Year Adeline Martin of South Terrebonne High School; Distinguished Diplomat Katherine Theriot of the Terrebonne Economic Development Authority; Chamber Star Dr. Gary Wiltz, CEO of Teche Action Clinic; Community Champion Mike Barker of Barker Buick GMC; and HTV’s Eugene J. Folse Outstanding Veteran Jack Croaker.

Congratulations and well done to all the people who garnered honors during this year’s banquet. It is because of you and others like you that the organization is able to do the good it does.

Cheers – Start Corp.

The Start Corp. is all about helping. But the focus of helping people be better able to help themselves is a bit different than many nonprofits.

The work the organization does is important, and it helps local people do more for themselves.

The group’s mission is to “promote opportunities, which enhance the self-sufficiency of people who are impaired in their abilities to live and function independently.”

That is a noble and worthwhile goal, but it’s one that doesn’t happen without the hard work and dedication of the people directly involved in the mission and those who support it from outside.

Executive Director Casey Guidry estimates that the organization delivered 7,500 services to 2,800 people during November alone.

That is impressive.

If you would like to learn more, call the group at 879-3966 or visit it at 420 Magnolia St., Houma.

Cheers – New chief

Lafourche Parish Fire District No. 3 has a new leader.

Kully Griffin was named the department’s new chief Wednesday night.

Congratulations to someone who has been active in the department since 1999, when he first began his service as a volunteer.

He takes over the post from former Chief Freddy Guidry, who died June 30. Griffin has been the interim chief since July and credits Guidry with teaching him much of what he brings to the office.

“Ninety percent of what I learned came from him,” Griffin said. “He was my mentor even before I knew what a mentor was. He helped me tremendously. Without him, there’s no way I would have even considered or been ready to take this job.”

Welcome to this new job.
