Without a doubt, WhatsApp is among the most popular messaging apps in the world. Even the slightest slowdown in its service impacts the communication across the world, and #WhatsAppDown begins trending. However, while WhatsApp is an important part of our daily lives, one common complaint that most people seem to have is that they receive too many notifications from the app. Be it from chat groups they don’t want to be a part of or about new media being shared, file being too heavy to be sent, and so on. In a bid to make things easier for its users, WhatsApp is working on a feature that lets a user block notifications on the app they don’t want to see. With this, users can block up to ten different notifications, and is expected to be a game-changer in terms of how people receive notifications.

The new update from WhatsApp lets users choose which notifications they want to see. The new upgrade has been reported by Android Police. Going beyond muting, users can actually block notifications from group chats that they don’t necessarily follow regularly. Other WhatsApp notifications, including pop-up alerts that a media file they are trying to send is too big, can also be blocked with this new update. In all, there are 10 ‘Notification Channels’ for users to select from when determining the alerts they want to see and those they do not want popping up in their view, state news reports. These categories include Group Notifications, Message Notifications, Chat History Backup, Critical App Alerts, Sending Media, Silent Notifications, Failure Notifications, Media Playback, Uncategorised, and Other Notifications.

Within these ten categories exist sub-categories too. For instance, users can choose some categories to have an urgent notification tone or ‘alert chime’. Similarly, they can also mark certain categories as low priority with no sound or visual alert. The Notifications Channel feature is currently only available in the beta version of WhatsApp. It will be rolled out worldwide after the company completes its testing. This will be one of the major updates launched by WhatsApp after the ‘delete for everyone’ feature and the ‘blue tick’ for seen messages. With this update, WhatsApp will offer a more customised service to users.
