What exactly does Theresa May want from Brexit? It’s staggering to conclude that eight months on from the general election, and a year and a half since she became prime minister, we still don’t know. Does she want what Jacob Rees-Mogg has described as Brexit In Name Only – the softest possible exit from the EU, which leaves us still tied to its laws and regulations, yet unable to influence them? Or does she favour something more radical that frees us as quickly and decisively as possible, letting us pursue trade across the globe? While this hapless Government tries to make up its mind, the clock is ticking. Hence the debate about how long the transition period should be: a desperate bid to buy time to prepare for change, yes, but also to delay deciding what those very changes should be.
