The Raiders are set to hire Brian Callahan as quarterbacks coach, SI’s Albert Breer reported Friday afternoon.

Callahan is the son of former Raiders head coach Bill Callahan, who replaced the traded Jon Gruden in Oakland 16 years ago. The Detroit Lions fired the younger Callahan on Monday as quarterbacks coach, and he lands on Gruden’s staff less than a week later.

It wasn’t clear whether Gruden would bring on a quarterbacks coach, given the involvement both he and offensive coordinator Greg Olson will have with the position. On Jan. 17, Olson said on a conference call he and Gruden were still discussing whether to hire a coach for the position.

Callahan will be Derek Carr’s third quarterbacks coach in three seasons after Todd Downing (2016) and Jake Peetz (2017). Carr’s coaching brain trust is now complete, going from Jack Del Rio, Downing and Peetz to Gruden, Olson and Callahan.

Callahan coached the Lions quarterbacks in 2016 and 2017. Before that, he coached on the Denver Broncos staff for six seasons, serving as quarterbacks coach in 2015 for a Peyton Manning-led Super Bowl team. Per multiple reports, Callahan interviewed with the Tennessee Titans and New York Jets before sticking on Oakland’s staff.
