WESTPORT — A car fire in the emergency lane of I-95 south was quickly extinguished Friday evening.

The Westport Fire Department responded to a fire that had broken out from the engine of Scion Xb while it was driving between Exits 18 and 17 around 9:58 p.m. Friday.

By the time firefighters got to the scene, the car’s two passengers had already escaped the car, of which the entire front end and passenger compartment was engulfed in flames.

Connecticut State Police were on scene to control traffic as three engines and one car worked to extinguish the fire. The department cleared the scene of the accident by 10:39 p.m.

Police said the car was later towed off the scene.
