Despite a law and order situation in a lot of places in the country and no showcase in nearly 4-5 states, Sanjay Leela Bhansali‘s Padmaavat still earned Rs 24 crore at the box office on its opening day. And now on its second day, the film has taken complete advantage of the long Republic day weekend and raked in Rs 32 crores, bringing the total earnings of the film till now, including the paid previews of Rs 4-5 crore, to Rs 56 crore. These numbers are phenomenal given the film’s ban in 4 major cities like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Gujarat. If Padmaavat would have had an easy breezy release then the film’s BO collections would have been not less than Rs 70 crores in the first two days.

Trade analyst and senior film critic, Taran Adarsh, took to Twitter to declare the exceptional numbers. He tweeted, “#Padmaavat has a HUMONGOUS Day 2… Had it been a smooth release [some states are not screening the film], the all-India biz would’ve touched ₹ 40 cr… Wed 5 cr, Thu 19 cr, Fri 32 cr. Total: ₹ 56 cr. India biz… SUPERB!” (ALSO READ : Padmaavat Box Office Report Day 2 : Here’s How Deepika Padukone’s Film Is On A Record Smashing Spree In Key Overseas Markets)

Going by the positive reviews that the film has been garnering by the critics and audiences at large, film buffs and trade analysts are predicting Padmaavat to cross the Rs 100 crore mark in this extended opening weekend itself. The film has been made on a lavish budget of Rs 180 crore. The makers spent a further Rs 20 crore to convert the film in 3D and IMAX formats to give the viewers an enhanced experience watching the film in all its grandeur—something that Bhansali’s films are known for. Padmaavat has an open ground of nearly 12 to 15 days within which it has to recover its costs and earn profits. Let’s see if it is able to do so. Co-produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali Productions and Viacom 18, Padmaavat stars Deepika Padukone as Rani Padmavati, Shahid Kapoor as Maharaj Rawal Ratan Singh and Ranveer Singh as Alauddin Khilji. Based on the 16th-century Sufi poet, Malik Muhammad Jayasi’s epic poem, Padmaavat, the film has been mired in controversy from the day Bhansali announced he would be making it. The film has had a trilingual release –Hindi, Telugu and Tamil.
