Joint civic body meet today to find solution to sealing

Drive started in December last year

The three municipal corporations of Delhi — East, North and South — will hold a joint meeting on Saturday to find a solution to the ongoing sealing of shops in markets across the Capital.

Sources from the Bharatiya Janata Party, which is the ruling party in the civic bodies, said the meeting is being organised to pass a resolution to provide a six-month stay on sealing of commercial properties by the Supreme Court-appointed monitoring committee.

The three mayors, Kamaljeet Sehrawat, Preety Agarwal and Neema Bhagat, will be present at the meeting along with the councillors to pass the resolution.

However, Leader of Opposition in the South Delhi Municipal Corporation Ramesh Matiala on Friday blamed the BJP.

“We have, time and again, reiterated that the matter lies with the municipality, which is led by the BJP for over a decade now. They have just been fooling the traders and have done nothing to help them out. All this sympathy is a farce,” Mr. Matiala said.

In a press briefing on Thursday, BJP Delhi unit president Manoj Tiwari had discussed the gravity of the sealing drive, which has been affecting the lives of traders in the city.

“In this emergency session, the three municipal corporations will pass a resolution requesting that the ongoing sealing be stayed for six months. This period will be used by the civic bodies and the Delhi government to complete clarification work on formation of regularisation and conversion charge rules, and put them in the public domain,” Mr. Tiwari had said.

Blame game

Since the sealing drives started in December last year from the posh Defence Colony market, the Delhi government and the BJP in the municipality have been blaming each other for not bringing out a comprehensive rule to stop sealing.

However, the BJP has been alleging that the Kejriwal government had failed the people of Delhi by neither notifying commercial roads nor starting formalities for regularisation of unauthorised colonies.
