STAMFORD — One of the more anticipated boys basketball games of the season did not disappoint.

Trinity Catholic and Wilton played a fast-paced, offensive-minded 32 minutes Friday night, with the Crusaders pulling away in the fourth for an 82-73 victory.

Trinity (9-3, 8-1 FCIAC) stays in the top half of the FCIAC field while Wilton (7-4, 5-3) drops three games back of first-place Ridgefield, which the Warriors face Tuesday.

Trinity knew it would be in for an up-and-down game and that is exactly what it got from Wilton.

“This was a big win, especially because last year they knocked us out of FCIACs. We really wanted this win so much, as a team,” Trinity’s Stephon McGill said. “We love this pace. We like to get the ball and move up the court fast. This game we were able to get on the fast break for buckets and get back on defense.”

McGill led Trinity with 25 points while Contavio Dutreil and Dimitry Moise each put in 19.

For Wilton, Antonio Brancato scored a game-high 28 points, keeping his team in the game by driving to the hoop for layups all second half.

The Warriors trimmed the Trinity lead down to 45-44 in the third quarter but could not get any closer.

“The game plan was to keep them off the boards and let certain kids take certain shots and we did a good job defensively sticking to that game plan, but they hit their shots,” Wilton coach Joel Geriak said. “The effort tonight was awesome. The kids played their tails off. I couldn’t ask for any more as a coach, I just wish we were walking out with a W.”

Wilton stayed in the game, in part, by going 20-23 from the free throw line.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Stephon McGill, Trinity. McGill not only led the team in scoring, he controlled the ball all night for the Crusaders. His patience and decision-making on offense was the key to the game for Trinity as he seemed to know exactly when to take it to the hoop and when to work it around outside.

QUOTABLE

“I give credit to all the guys on the team tonight but Steph has really started to become a floor general out there,” Trinity coach Mike Walsh said. “He had a really good game tonight. He made key passes in key situations, inside and also outside. I thought they all played well tonight but he was really good and he was the key for us.”
