MPO-listed secondary and higher secondary teachers from private educational institutions once again will boycott classes, this time for two days, starting today.
They took the decision amid their indefinite hunger strike that waged into the 12th day yesterday. Earlier, they boycotted classes on Janurary 21, 23, 24 and 25.
Demanding nationalisation of their institutions, they started the hunger strike on January 15 at the Jatiya Press Club under the banner of Besarkari Shikkha Jatiyakaran Liaison Forum.
“Still there is no positive response from the government regarding our demand. So, we have decided to boycott classes for the next two days,” said GM Shawon, joint convener of the forum, yesterday.
Many political leaders and organisations have so far expressed solidarity with the teachers, he said.
According to the teachers, the government can earn on an average Tk 121.97 crore per month from students' monthly tuition fees after nationalisation of all their institutions.
It would be possible if monthly tuition fee of a student is increased to Tk 75 from Tk 15, they said, adding that the government can also earn around Tk 30 crore per year from the income generated from properties of the institutions including, pond, land and markets.
At least 147 fell sick and 40 were hospitalised so far.
