Coronation Street star Georgia Taylor warns of baby troubles for Toyah

WHILE a couple of her Coronation Street co-stars have announced plans to leave the cobbles this year, Georgia Taylor says the idea of packing her bags and heading off to pastures new could not be further from her mind.

Georgia has hinted at a major baby-based decision for Toyah and Eva

Both Catherine Tyldesley (who plays Eva Price) and Shayne Ward (Aidan Connor) will depart the show this summer. Georgia, on the other hand, has only just returned to the cobbles – she re-joined the show in 2016 after 13 years away – and so has no intention of following them out of the door.

“I am so far away from that I can’t even tell you!” laughs Georgia, 37.

“Honestly, the thought of getting back out on that audition circuit does not appeal. I am so happy here. I’m not saying I’ll never do it again, but right now I’ve got so much going on and I’m really enjoying being back. I’m not getting itchy feet.”

Just as well, for Georgia is lined up for a year that is as dramatic as it is busy. Viewers have already seen her character, Toyah Battersby, struggling to deal with the shock return to Weatherfield of Carla Connor (Alison King) – the ex-girlfriend of Toyah’s boyfriend, Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne).

Then last week Toyah received the devastating news that the surrogate carrying their baby, Jacqui, had had a miscarriage.

But rather than telling Peter of the tragic development, the Rovers landlady confided in her half-sister, Eva, instead.

And this week, when Peter excitedly starts discussing starting work on the baby’s nursery, Toyah is left guilt-ridden.

“It just rubs salt in the wound,” Georgia says.

“He’s so excited about their future together and she knows at that point there is no child, but she still doesn’t say anything.

“Although it’s not necessarily the right decision, it’s with all the best intentions. She knows that Peter has been finding things hard lately and she overheard him say that the only thing that keeps him going is the thought of Toyah and this baby they’re having.”

It’s Peter’s statement that convinces Toyah not to break the news to him, fearful that he’s in such a vulnerable state that such a devastating development might tip him over the edge.

“She decides she needs to sit on the news for a bit, but then unfortunately the lie perpetuates itself and when do you break that news to someone?” muses Georgia.

At the same time, Eva has her own dilemma. Pregnant with her ex’s baby, she has decided to have a termination; but when Toyah discovers that Eva has gone to the abortion clinic, she follows her there, insisting she wants to support her.

“They’ve been growing much closer over the last few weeks, confiding in each other a lot,” explains Georgia.

“Toyah knows that Eva is in a difficult situation and she’s concerned that Eva is potentially making a rash, life-changing decision.

“She wants to see that Eva is OK. She’s genuinely worried for her and they end up having a discussion that might change Eva’s mind; she suggests to Eva that there might actually be another solution.”

The other solution might involve a momentous deception, however… Georgia, who was born in Wigan, joined Coronation Street in 1997 as a member of the warring Battersby family.

She left in 2003 and went on to appear in shows such as Casualty, where she spent four years as Ruth Winters, and Law & Order: UK. “I’m guessing there’s probably more trouble ahead for Toyah,” predicts Georgia with a laugh.

“It’s a soap and there’s always drama and we don’t have many couples that are happy.

“With Toyah and Peter there have been so many secrets kept on either side, and it feels like a house of cards that’s just waiting to crumble. It’s just a case of how long that takes.”
