Assam on Friday celebrated the 69th Republic Day amid a boycott call of the function given by the anti-talk faction of Ulfa militants and two bomb blasts triggered by the outfit in Tinsukia district of Assam.
However, there were no reports of any causality or damage of the blasts that occurred at Jagun and Ledo almost simultaneously in the eastern Assam district bordering Arunachal Pradesh. Police feel that the militants have triggered the low intensity blasts just to make its presence felt.
Although the Ulfa faction had called for a boycott of the Republic Day celebrations, it failed to deter the people of the state from taking part in the celebrations and large number of people too part in different programmes organised across the State.
Assam Governor Professor Jagdish Mukhi unfurled the tricolor at
the official Republic Day function organized by the Assam Government at the Veterinary College ground at Khanapara area of the city. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also participated in the programme as the Chief Guest.
Professor Mukhi while delivering his speech highlighted the steps taken by the Government of Assam to initiate development in Assam as well as to bring lasting peace to the State.
The Governor also hailed the Government steps to organise the Global Investment Summit from February 3 this year and hoped that it would bring in the desired industrial development in the State.
The jawans of Assam police and the Assam police’s women commando wing Veerangana put up brave stunts involving motorcycle at the parade ground. The organisers also lined up several cultural programmes in the venue showcasing the colourful music and dance of different tribal communities of the State.
The Assam Government also honoured veteran journalist and editor of the vernacular news daily Agradoot, Kanaksen Deka with the Republic Day Journalism Award for the current year. Other Ministers of the Chief Minister Sarbananda Snowal’s cabinet and public representatives also took part in different functions of the Republic Day celebrations across the State.
