CHARUKOLA 80

Group Painting Exhibition at Zainul Gallery

A group painting exhibition showcasing the works of 14 artists titled “Charukola 80” commenced at Zainul Gallery-2 in Faculty of Fine Arts (FFA), University of Dhaka (DU). The artists were prior students of the department who graduated in 1980. Renowned artist Rafiqun Nabi inaugurated the exhibition on January 25 as chief guest while eminent artists Professor Abul Barq Alvi and Professor Nisar Hossain, Dean of FFA at DU attended the event as special guests.

Among the participating artists, renowned painter Ahmed Shamsuddoha's two artworks are beautifully composed with soothing textures and use of warm colours. Noted painter Bimanesh Chandra Biswas impressively depicted the riverine and hilly landscapes with exquisite hues of yellow ochre, burnt ambre, green and blue. The off-white space of his canvas coupled with the mature tints creates a balanced perspective.

A lone female figure beside a window is portrayed by noted painter Samar Majumder. His other work titled “The Pond” also depicts a solitary female bathing at a pond. Rezaun Nabi also painted a single woman holding a glass of wine. Another work by Nabi is a beautiful abstract composition, which seems to be reminiscent with the compositional style of renowned American abstractionist Mark Rothko.

Kalam Akhand illustrated butterflies in a forest while Kamrunnahar Tondra beautifully portrayed feminine grace with oriental motifs. Rhythmic compositional beauty by Zahirul Alam, a still life and rural landscape by Sheikh Md. Romiz Uddin, an artistic homage to the hard labour of fishermen on boats by Abdul Latif are other aspects of the exhibition. Sardar Samsul Islam, Nazib Mohammad, Monirul Islam, Mafruha Begum, and Esmeaker Uddin Ahmed are other participating artists of the show.

The exhibition, opening from 12 noon to 7pm daily, will conclude on January 30.
