Leave it to the man who opened a pirate supply store to come up with a fun way to kick off a book tour.

The co-founder of 826 Valencia St. — home to the pirate store and nonprofit writing center — will hit the road Friday, Jan. 26, with Mokhtar Alkhanshali, the subject of his new book, “The Monk of Mokha.” The book recounts the captivating story of Alkhanshali, a young Yemeni American who grew up in the Tenderloin and became — through perseverance and a series of improbable adventures and narrow escapes — the founder of his own coffee-roasting company, Oakland’s Port of Mokha.

Eggers and Alkhanshali will open the book tour, in partnership with the San Francisco Public Library, at 10:30 a.m. Friday on the steps of City Hall. They’ll speak, as will James Freeman, founder and CEO of Blue Bottle Coffee; Hellen Russel, co-founder of Equator Coffee; San Francisco City Librarian Luis Herrera; Supervisor Jane Kim; and others.

The biodiesel- and solar-powered bookmobile will then tour five bookstores in San Francisco over the weekend. Here are the locations and times:
