Locum Associate or Senior Editor, Nature Biomedical Engineering : London, United Kingdom

Job title: Locum Associate or Senior Editor

Department: Nature Biomedical Engineering

Location: London or New York

Springer Nature, the publisher of Nature, is looking to recruit one locum editor for Nature Biomedical Engineering, to cover an absence. The position is offered for a period of at least 6 months.

Nature Biomedical Engineering publishes original research, reviews and commentary of high significance to the biomedical engineering community, including bench scientists interested in devising materials, methods, technologies and therapies to combat disease; engineers designing and optimizing medical devices and procedures; and clinicians leveraging research outputs in biomedical engineering to assess patient health and deliver therapy across a variety of clinical settings and healthcare contexts.

We are seeking a biomedical scientist, ideally with a background in biomedical imaging (preclinical or clinical) and/or applied cancer research, yet we will consider candidates with experience in applied biomedicine. Candidates must have a PhD in an area relevant to the applied biomedical sciences or engineering, and a strong research record. Postdoctoral experience is preferred. Previous editorial experience is not required, but proficiency in scientific writing is essential.

This position represents a rare and exciting opportunity to shape a Nature research journal that straddles the biomedical sciences, the physical sciences and engineering. Broad scientific knowledge and training, excellent literary skills, the ability to absorb new areas of research, and a keen interest in the practice and communication of science are prerequisites. The successful candidate must therefore be dynamic and outgoing, and have excellent interpersonal skills.

The successful applicant will work within a close-knit, multidisciplinary team of editors on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection, overseeing of peer review, generation and discussion of ideas for new content, commissioning and editing of reviews and commentary, and writing for the journal. A key aspect of the job is liaising with the scientific community through laboratory visits and international conferences.

The position will be based in our London or New York offices.

Applicants should send, as a single file,

a CV (which should include a brief account of the applicant’s research accomplishments and of other relevant experience),
a discussion, in News & Views style (800–1000 words), of an outstanding recent paper from the biomedical engineering literature,
a cover letter that summarizes the applicant’s research achievements, explains their suitability for the position, details salary expectations, and states their preferred office of employment.

Closing date: 28th February 2018
