Tempe, Ariz. • The Utah men’s basketball team pulled off the type of victory it had often fallen short of this season, beating No. 21 Arizona State 80-77 on Thursday night at Wells Fargo Arena in a Pac-12 Conference game.

Sedrick Barefield scored all 17 of his points in the second half — including the game-tying 3-pointer with under three seconds to play — and overtime, where he also hit a 3-pointer to give Utah the lead.

Arizona State had a chance to tie the game trailing 79-77 with under 15 seconds left, but missed all three shots and Utah got possession, before Barefield grabbed a loose ball and was fouled. Barefield made one free throw for the final margin and Arizona State could not make a game-tying attempt at the buzzer.

Tyler Rawson and David Collette both finished with 15 points for Utah. Jayce Johnson also had 15 points for the Utes, a career-high, plus six rebounds.

Utah hung tough against both Arizona and Arizona State at home earlier this season but did not win either game. With Thursday’s victory, the Utes improved to 5-4 in the Pac-12 and 13-7 overall.
