Voters will soon be asked to approve money to replace the Sherman Volunteer Fire Department’s dock.

Jim Reilly, the department’s chief, told the Board of Selectmen on Thursday that the dock failed last year and they had to finish the season by using the Candlewood Lake Authority’s dock. He hopes to be able to use their own again this year.

The floor boards have rotted out. The dock is also sinking and can’t be kept up by floats based on the dock’s design, Reilly said.

A current estimate to replace the dock is $6,500 but Reilly said he will look for other options, especially to compare the possibility of using pressure-treated wood or composite decking.

The selectmen voted to include the item in an upcoming town meeting, which will be scheduled later, and set the maximum price for the dock at $12,000.
