YORK could soon become home to a pioneering new "centre of excellence" for disabled children after councillors approved a £4.2million to back the project.

The proposals got the backing of senior city councillors at an executive meeting on Thursday night, and design and planning work can now start.

The new centre will go on the site of Windsor House care home, next door to Hob Moor schools, and will include a new Forest School.

Children's services worker William Shaw told the councillors the new centre would ease the pressure on families, and help disabled children stay at home.
