Holly Springs, N.C. — Wake County deputies were at a private school in Holly Springs on Friday morning after a 4-year-old girl was abducted in a domestic dispute, authorities said.
The girl's mother took her shortly after 9 a.m. from the New School Montessori Center, at 5617 Sunset Lake Road, Sheriff Donnie Harrison said.
School officials declined to comment on what they termed "an incident" after the morning carpool.
"The incident took place in the parking lot area around 9:10 [a.m.], and the school contacted 911 immediately," they wrote in a statement. "We remain dedicated to the safety of all of our students, staff and families."
Harrison said the mother and child were stopped on Interstate 95 in Emporia, Va., by the Virginia Highway Patrol and that the girl was taken into protective custody.
The girl was unharmed, and her father was on his way to Virginia to pick her up, the sheriff said.
No charges will be filed in the case, which Harrison called a civil custody matter.
The school was operating normally after notifying parents of the incident, administrators said.
