The debate around the misbehaving Wanderers pitch went into overdrive after umpires took the players off the field after South African opener Dean Elgar was struck on the helmet by a Jasprit Bumrah delivery.
The pitch has come under question for major part of the Test with balls kicking off a length and numerous times hitting the batsmen on the gloves or the midriff.
India had earlier endured some tough times with the bat, with almost all batsmen braving a pitch that had significant variable bounce. They were able to score 247 before being bowled out. Chasing 241, South Africa had lost Aiden Markram to a ball that rose from short of a lenght. The trend continued with Elgar and Hashim Amla at the crease. There were more than a couple of balls that rose steeply, and although the umpires convened to discuss the pitch, they deemed the pitch good enough to play cricket on.
However, when a short delivery from Jasprit Bumrah hit Elgar on the helmet, the umpires asked the players to get off the field. The decision divided opinion, with many feeling that Elgar just got into a tangle playing the short delivery. There was also people who felt India were handed a raw deal with the umpires letting them bat out the 2nd innings.
Here are some reactions from twitter about the umpires' decision:
On these nasty wickets favouring fast bowlers the danger of serious injury to batsmen is grave, unlike turning tracks. They bite but don't kill #IndiaVsSouthAfrica

You don't want anyone getting hurt. This test is now on borrowed time

In any case, this is a very poor pitch.

Do I see schadenfreude in all those Indian batsmen in history who suffered this brutality!!!

They cant be playing cricket on this pitch. What are they waiting for?

So whats the difference of this pitch than earlier today? Sunny G is right. If the umpires were going to call it off, then it should have been done earlier.... but India battled through it. Now SA should have to do the same.. sadly Elgar didnt play it well.

Two things I will say about this test .. if anyone ever calls this Indian batting line up flat track bullies again they need to be reminded of the skill and bravery they have shown in this innings ..

If they were going to call this off it should have been when the balls were tearing off a length not when a short ball was just played badly.

This is just not acceptable...............
