LANSING — A model train exhibit opens Saturday at Impression 5 Science Center.
"Trains: Full STEAM Ahead" is a traveling exhibit showcasing a fully functioning model train network.
The Capital Area Railway Society has created a network of more than 250 railcars and 168 feet of track for the display. The train network runs on a real-time schedule that includes trains for transporting people, livestock and commodities.
"This exhibit is special because it really brings family members together," said Laura Zeller, director of communications at Impression 5 Science Center. "Trains have an amazing ability to capture the imagination and enthusiasm of such a broad audience and create a beautiful bridge to sharing a passion and sharing knowledge."
The display features HO scale trains, which are scaled to 1/87th the size of actual trains. The exhibit will also feature examples of other common model train sizes for hobbies and enthusiasts to explore.
The exhibit also features a variety of wooden and electric train sets that children will be able to interact with and a collection of real train artifacts.
The "Full STEAM Ahead" exhibit was last at the Science Center in 2015. The exhibit runs through April 8.
