A Rochester Institute of Technology student charged with murder in connection with the death of her mother last summer pleaded not guilty Friday.

Karrie Neurauter, 20, entered the plea during her arraignment on a charge of second-degree murder in City of Corning Court.

Neurauter, of Syracuse, and her father, 45-year-old Lloyd Neurauter of North Brunswick, New Jersey, are accused of killing her mother, Michele Neurauter, 46, of Corning.

Lloyd Neurauter was Michele's ex-husband. He is also charged with second-degree murder.

Karrie Neurauter, who was represented in court by attorney David Hoffman of the Steuben County Public Defender's Office, also waived a preliminary hearing in the matter.

Karrie Neurauter, who is a fourth-year student majoring in computer engineering technology, was taken into custody Thursday after police executed a search warrant at her Syracuse home.

Police also executed search warrants at Michele Neurauter's Corning home and Lloyd Neurauter's New Jersey residence Thursday. Lloyd Neurauter was taken into custody after police in Princeton, New Jersey, spotted him on the roof of a parking garage.

The investigation into Michele Neurauter's death began in late August 2017 when police responded to a “suspicious circumstances” call to her home on Dwight Avenue in Corning. Police released no details about their inquiry at the time.

Steuben County District Attorney Brooks Baker said the death was a "homicide staged as a suicide" but said police became suspicious and investigated further.

Baker wouldn't elaborate on the manner of Michele Neurauter's death, except to confirm it was by strangulation.

Baker also wouldn't comment on possible motive or evidence. He said a lot of people still need to be interviewed and facts compiled.

Authorities weren't anticipating making arrests so soon, but without offering specifics, Baker said the investigation accelerated, prompting immediate action.

City Judge Mathew McCarthy remanded Karrie Neurauter to the Steuben County Jail without bail. The next step will be presentation of the case to a grand jury, and then transfer to county court, Baker said.

Lloyd Neurauter remains in a New Jersey jail and will have to be extradited back to New York. Baker said he didn't know the status of that process as of Friday afternoon.
