Island weaver inspired at an early age

(Jan. 25, 2018) Weaver Cara DeHeart found her inspiration for a career in the creative arts as a teenager on the island, thanks to an extracurricular program at Nantucket High School and the guidance of the artisans at Nantucket Looms.

“Growing up, I was into drawing and painting, that kind of art,” she said. “At the age of 15, I did an elective program through the high school at Nantucket Looms, which I really enjoyed. That’s where this all started. It’s great to have been part of it and still weaving for them.”

The Nantucket Arts Council recently recognized DeHeart’s two decades of work and artistic achievements with its Margaretta Nettles Award for Excellence in the Visual and Performing Arts. The award is made periodically in memory of the longtime, nationally-recognized Nantucket weaver, whose family established the fund after her death in 2002.

Although DeHeart didn’t know Nettles, she has seen her work and thinks she was “an amazing weaver.”
