Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper has opened up the application process for Boulder district attorney, as his office seeks to replace Stan Garnett, who announced he is resigning at the end of February.

Applicants must be registered to vote in Boulder County and must have been practicing law for at least five years.

The application process will close  Feb. 2, at which time Hickenlooper will choose someone to serve the remaining three years of Garnett's term.

Garnett, who is leaving for a job in private practice at his old firm, said he hopes to stay on for at least a week or so after Hickenlooper chooses a replacement to ease the transition.

"I'm working closely with the governor's office on the process," Garnett said.

At this time, nobody has publicly announced his or her intention to pursue the position.
