Eagle boys and girls knock off Mellen

The Solon Springs boys basketball team bounced back from a 53-46 loss last week at Ironwood with wins over Mellen (75-44) on Jan. 19 and Mercer (64-59) Tuesday.

Jens Gehl returned to action after missing several games to lead the Eagles with 18 points in their win over Mellen.

Nick Zosel was next with 15 points, followed by Christian Sellwood with 14 points, and Aaron Pfister 13.

Blaze Smith led Mellen with 20 points.

Solon Springs plays at Bayfield tonight and hosts South Shore Tuesday. Both games begin at 7:15 p.m.

NOTE: No further information was available for the games with Ironwood and Mercer.

Girls basketball

The Eagles held on for a 46-45 win over the Mellen Granite Diggers Jan. 15 in Solon Springs.

After the Eagles took a 23-14 halftime lead, things got interesting in the second half with Mellen having a 31-23 advantage.

Leading Mellen’s comeback was Mikayla Kretzschmar, who scored 19 of her game-high 25 points in the second half. Morgan Ellias also scored 12 of her 15 points in the second half.

Domonique Orozco and Kylli Rajala scored 13 points apiece for Solon Springs. Morgan Anderson added 12 points.
