MALIBU, Calif. (AP) — Kameron Edwards scored 16 points and Trae Berhow's lone 3-pointer of the night with 1.2 seconds left proved to be the game-winner as Pepperdine beat Loyola Marymount 71-70 on Thursday.
Berhow's shot was the first lead for Pepperdine (4-17, 1-8 West Coast Conference) since a 2-0 lead on a shot by Edwards 43 seconds in. Berhow finished with 11 rebounds. LMU never got another shot attempt.
Colbey Ross — who distributed 11 assists — made 1 of 2 free throws to narrow the Waves' deficit to 70-68. He missed the second free throw, and off a deflection, the ball ricocheted to Berhow who was standing behind the 3-point line.
Justin Batemon made two foul shots with six seconds left to put the Lions up 70-67. Right before that, Ross missed one of two and forced the Waves to foul.
Loyola Marymount led 32-22 at halftime before the Waves started the second half on a 73-second, 8-0 run. Later, Eric Cooper Jr., hit a 3-pointer and the Waves trailed 48-47 with 11:30 to go. Cooper scored 15.
After a TV timeout, Loyola Marymount responded with an 8-2 run and pushed the lead to seven with 9:26 left. Pepperdine closed within two on three more occasions before tying it at 64 on Matthew Atewe's layin with 1:46 left.
Steve Haney led Loyola Marymount (6-14, 1-8) with 17 points before fouling out. Mattias Markusson scored 14 but missed two free throws with 31 seconds and the Lions holding a 68-66 lead.
