Tramaine Isabell's 40-points powers Drexel over Elon

Tramaine Isabell enjoyed a career-best performance and Drexel needed every bit of his offense to end a five-game losing streak.

A 6-foot-1 junior transfer from Missouri, Isabell scored 40 points as Drexel defeated Elon, 83-79 in Thursday’s Colonial Athletic Conference game at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.

Drexel improved to 8-14 and 2-7 in the CAA while Elon fell to 12-10, 4-5.

Isabell’s previous career high was 35 points in an 89-77 win over Rider on Dec. 2.

He became Drexel’s first 40-point scorer since Michael Anderson in 1988.

Against Elon, he made 14 of 23 shots, including 7 of 11 from thre-point range and 5 of 7 from the foul line.

Drexel, which trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half, avenged an earlier 90-75 loss at Elon on Dec. 30.

Isabell made one of two free throws to get the Dragons within 72-71 with 2 minutes and 36 seconds left.  After Elon’s Tyler Seibring (19 points) missed a jumper, Isabell gave the Dragons a 74-72 lead with a three-pointer from the top of the key with 2:10 left.

Seibring missed a driving layup and with 1:24 left Isabell was fouled from beyond the arc and made all three free throws, boosting the lead to 77-72.

Seibring’s corner three-pointer made it 77-75 with 1:12 left. Drexel’s Alihan Demir hit a jumper from inside the foul line but Elon answered with a Sheldon Eberhardt driving layup, with 35.6 seconds left.

With the ball and a two-point lead, Drexel’s Troy Harper made both ends of a 1-and-1, increasing the lead to 81-77 with 20.6 seconds left. Elon’s Steven Santa Ana then scored on a driving layup.  with nine seconds left but Drexel’s Sammy Mojica iced the win by hitting both ends of a 1-and-1 with 3.6 seconds left.
