A man was charged with DWI early today after he made a turn so wide that he hit the curb of a bridge, blowing out one of his tires, Thibodaux Police said.

Charles Billiot Jr., 30, was also charged with improper lane usage and was released on a misdemeanor summons, Police Chief Bryan Zeringue said in a news release.

Zeringue said that about 2:25 a.m., one of his officers was stopped behind Billiot's pickup truck in the turning lane near La. 308 and the Jackson Street Bridge. After Billiot hit the curb, the officer stopped him in the parking lot of a business near Jackson and St. Mary streets.

The officer smelled alcohol, and Billiot performed poorly on a field sobriety test, Zeringue said. His blood-alcohol content was .220.

Zeringue said a deputy from another agency also witnessed the incident.
