Students from over 30 Delhi University colleges participate in rally; demand better transport facilities

Demanding better public transport facilities for students, the All India Students’ Association (AISA) on Thursday marched to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s residence.

The march saw participation by students from over 30 Delhi University colleges. Shouting slogans, the students demanded immediate rollback of the Delhi Metro fare hike.

“Mr. Kejriwal extended his support to the ongoing movement and accepted most of the demands. He promised to ensure more DTC buses and U-special buses for DU colleges. He also agreed that DTC bus passes will now be valid in AC buses and their validity will be increased from four months to six months,” the AISA said in a statement.

Hundreds of DU students had last week protested against the metro fare hike. They ‘occupied’ Vishwavidyalaya metro station and blocked a part of Ring Road as well.

“Following this, a metro official came out and asked for a week’s time. It was after a week that the students hit the streets again and asked Mr. Kejriwal to join the struggle,” the student’s body said.

AISA president in DU Kawalpreet Kaur said, “We were expecting a positive response from Mr. Kejriwal and the student community also joined in huge numbers. This is a big victory for our ongoing struggle for better public transport. But the demand for roll back of metro fares remains. We will continue the movement till the metro fare hike is rolled back. We will march to the Prime Minister’s house very soon in connection with the issue.”
