A 6-year-old boy was hospitalized Thursday after being ejected from a car driven by a 46-year-old woman believed to be his mother.
The crash happened at about 4 p.m. at the intersection of Bangerter Highway and 11400 South, according to South Jordan police Lt. Rob Hansen.
The woman was northbound in a sedan on Bangerter, Hansen said, and was turning left onto 11400 South when she was struck by a southbound car driven by an off-duty Unified Police Department.
According to a South Jordan police news release, the woman drove through a restricted-left-turn sign that was posted due to construction.
The boy sustained life-threatening injuries and is in critical condition, according to the release. The woman was transported to the hospital by ambulance, and her injuries are not life-threatening. The deputy sustained minor scratches.
Police are investigating whether the boy was wearing a seat belt or had other proper child restraints, the release said.
Due to frequent complaints of motorists disregarding the sign, officers had been in the intersection Thursday before the crash, the release said.
