The 34-year-old shot-stopper has agreed an 18-month contract with the Championship strugglers, according to Roker Report.
Lonergan returns to England today after spending the week in Spain with Leeds on a warm-weather training camp.
The former Fulham keeper enjoys a good relationship with Sunderland assistant boss Kit Symons, who signed him for the Whites in 2015.
Sunderland and Leeds have held talks over a fee for Lonergan.
It has been suggested that Elland Road bosses suggested a swap deal involving a Black Cats player.
